On March 7th, 2020, SDSU’s Asian Pacific Student Alliance will have the honor of arranging our annual High School Conference here on the campus of San Diego State University. The primary objective of our High School Conference is to promote a greater appreciation for academic success and ultimately serve as an inspirational drive for the attendees to pursue a higher education. APSA’s High School Conference gives our general body members the chance to connect with high school students and give back to our Asian and Pacific Islander community.

APSA Academic Co-Coordinator

Jeffrey Cardinez

Hi everyone! My name is Jeffrey Cardinez and I am one of the Asian Pacific Student Alliance’s (APSA) Academic Co-Coordinators for the 2019-2020 school year. I am a third year Psychology major with a minor in Counseling and Social Change and my hometown is National City, California. Currently, I am striving towards an MA in Counseling to serve as a guide towards individuals in ethnically diverse communities while also advocating for Asian-American issues and disadvantages. With the help of my Co-Coordinator, Jose Bravo, my executive board and APSA general body members, I am proud to present this year’s High School Conference theme, “Write the Unwritten”. This theme focuses on carving your future while being independent from your past experiences. College is a new experience, a chance for students to foster/develop their personality more and start anew. In this conference, we challenge students to escape the norm and start taking charge of their future.

I am ecstatic to find out that you are taking the first steps towards learning about a higher education!

2020 THEME: WRITE THE UNWRITTEN

“The future is not set in stone, and even if it was, stone can be broken.”

- Melanie Rawn

High school is a time where you start to discover your personality and interests. Not all of those discoveries were memorable or useful, so you might feel paranoid at the possibility of your high school self leaking into your college life.  You are not restrained to the actions you did prior to college. College is a place where students are able to make their own decisions. Experiences from your past gave you the knowledge to survive and thrive in society. Innovation is key, and college is a melting pot where you can experiment everything and still have people standing by your side. Take charge of your life, you only have one shot at it, make it a great life. Focus your attention on creating a life you want to live by writing your own story with the pieces from your past and present to envision a complete and content future. Take the chance, this is your moment. It’s time to “Write the Unwritten”.

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?

High School Conference is one of our biggest events during the Spring Semester and APSA need YOUR HELP! We are looking for role models who can help guide and inspire high school students who may feel uneasy about attending college. Volunteers would assist high school students on their path toward confidence, maturity, self-identity, and independence. The connections you make, the stories you share, and the wisdom you gain all contribute to your own growth as a leader. *All volunteers will get a free T-shirt!

Workshops

Our next High School Conference is March 7th, 2020. Students who attend will have the opportunity to participate in various workshops sessions centered on Academics, Leadership, Politics, Asian and Pacific Islander cultures, Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) and Admission. These workshops defined our conference and ultimately serve as a tool for promoting a greater appreciation for pursuing a higher degree in education. talent show

In addition, students who are talented in the performing arts also have the opportunity to express themselves at our High School Conference Talent Show. Through dance, music, art, poetry, or whichever talents to be discovered, we want to provide a platform for high school students to express themselves in front of their fellow peers.

The performing arts comes in a multitude of different forms, including but not limited to dance, art, music, and poetry. Through these forms, the performing arts has the power to showcase one’s passions, values, history, and culture. This is incredibly vital to not only one’s self expression, but also to show that the people performing are more than just students.

The purpose of hosting a Talent Show during High School conference is to not only showcase high school students unique talents, but to undermine the Model Minority Myth and stereotypes forced onto the Asian and Pacific Islander people. APSA want to hear YOUR STORY expressed on stage. Regardless of your ethnic background, if you have talent that you would like to showcase, feel free to sign up!

Performers will be required to submit one (1) detailed and in depth description of what their performance will entail.
